  • #WomanCrushWednesday - Hilda

Today my #WomanCrushWednesday is the first but certainly not the last babe who isn’t actually flesh and blood. A “plump pin-up” that came out of artist Duane Bryers’ head in the 1950’s, Hilda was an unlikely icon who never really lost popularity. Clad in everything from onesies to her birthday suit, Hilda was rocking the fatkini decades before bloggers ran with the idea. The Hilda character wasn’t perfect, she is often portrayed as being only clumsy and cute and I have yet to see an image of her flying a plane or giving the finger to anyone. She did however, represent a good chunk of the population at a time when plus-size women were treated like garbage and ignored in the arts. Here’s a fan gallery for some vintage fat visibility on this cold and gloomy Wednesday.
